Transforming a dreary family cabin on Kreighle Lake in Avon, Minnesota into a light-filled Scandinavian-inspired residence was the design goal for this empty-nester couple. The challenge: preserve the cabin’s character while introducing sustainable, handcrafted modern design.

The floor plan was reimagined into an open-living plan with seamless flow: walls removed, stairways opened, and spaces defined by functional yet intimate gathering zones. A cozy conversation area, a reading nook, and kitchen islands create balance within the airy interior. Large windows frame the natural surroundings and expansive lake views, while a slim awning window placed unexpectedly in the kitchen backsplash reinforces the home’s connection to nature.

Preserving and reusing original materials was central to the design. Fir beams, oak floors, trim, and doors were kept intact, while new cabinetry in vertical-grain larch pairs quietly with oak and fir. A steel fireplace island, soapstone counters, and custom stair rods balance the natural palette with strength and contrast.

Local craftsmanship became the soul of the project. A father-and-son carpenter team built custom details, with artisans from the small town contributing throughout. The interiors feature a farm-to-table palette of warm neutrals, lake blues, and moss greens, accented by blackened steel and oiled walnut. Furniture is scaled to the cabin’s intimate proportions, designed to be human-centered, approachable, and durable — perfectly suited for life with three hunting dogs.

Lighting was updated with Louis Poulsen fixtures and efficient LEDs to enhance the Scandinavian style, while solar shades filter sunlight and add coziness. Practicing universal design, the remodel ensures accessibility and aging in place with a single-level layout, wider hallways, and thoughtful circulation.

The result is a warm, sustainable, handcrafted modern home that honors its past while welcoming a new era of life, family, and connection on Kreighle Lake.
