For longstanding clients, the opportunity to refresh their grand Wayzata manor house marked a new chapter. Once defined by cherry cabinetry, dark granite, and mahogany furnishings, the interiors no longer reflected the couple’s life as empty nesters or their passion for hosting fundraising events. Inspired by the elegance of the Hamptons, the remodel sought to balance preservation and transformation — upholding the home’s grandeur while creating an inviting backdrop for both entertaining and daily life.

The design challenge began with compromise: the wife yearned to shed the home’s somber weight, while the husband preferred its stately formality. The solution honored both perspectives. Existing cherry millwork was preserved but enameled in Simply White, instantly lightening the architecture. The house seemed to expand outward — ceilings felt higher, windows reframed sweeping views, and new lighting became the belle of the ball.

In the Sunroom, cottage-style furniture upholstered in hand-printed linens softened the formality, paired with grass shades and a sisal rug for casual ease. The Kitchen saw the most dramatic transformation: dark granite was replaced with polished Bianco marble, a Sterling Gray island, and a custom Off-Black vitrine, striking a balance of elegance and bold character. Original limestone floors remain, now complemented by a modern walnut breakfast table and scalloped buffet that cleverly stores benches for entertaining.

The Family Room embodies comfort and versatility. A sandy palette layered with blue and orange accents sets the tone for both intimate evenings and large gatherings. A timeless leather sofa and custom Greek Key rug ground the space, while an oversized cocktail table and marble fireplace surround enhance both function and grandeur.

The result is a classic manor refreshed for modern living — lightened, inviting, and perfectly suited for intimate daily life and glittering events alike. Most importantly, the clients now see eye to eye, their home reflecting both their personalities and their shared vision of hospitality.
