Woodland Cabin
Once Upon a Time – A Fairytale Guest Cabin
When the first grandchild was born, our clients dreamed of creating a fairytale guest cabin for the next generation. Originally part of a 1930s summer resort, this family lakeside retreat in Hayward, Wisconsin has been lovingly preserved over time. With quintessential charm and a tiny footprint, the new 579 SF cabin was designed as a cozy addition for family gatherings — small but mighty.
The design layers vintage character with modern updates, ensuring the new cabin feels like it has always belonged. Inspired by the existing cottages, it carries forward the charm of the past while preparing for generations to come. A gleaming “Goldilocks’ Kitchenette” sparkles like a fairy princess, while cottage-style cabinetry painted in Dayroom Yellow brightens the Hearth Room in hues reminiscent of the Yellow Wood Sorrel, a native woodland flower.
Authentic materials root the project in tradition: a stone fireplace with a log mantel, Douglas fir floors, and crafted details that echo the original 1930s main cabin. The result is a storybook retreat — designed new, but alive with nostalgia, character, and family history.
And of course… they all lived happily ever after.
