Lake Huron Cottage

Biophilic Lake House Design for Three Generations

This Lake Huron cottage in Desbarats, Canada was designed as a sanctuary for three generations, a modest, 1,792 SF biophilic retreat that lives in harmony with its natural surroundings. Our client, a lifelong earth advocate, sought a home that would be eco-conscious, efficient, and deeply connected to nature, while also welcoming extended family across generations.

The cottage creates a small footprint, leaving much of the land undisturbed. Perched on a point with an N-S-E-W axis, panoramic views stretch endlessly across Lake Huron. A 23-foot folding door allows the Gathering Room to flow into the screened porch, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Biophilic design elements, from organic materials to cabinetry in hues of lichen, create a space that feels authentically rooted in the land.

Every detail was guided by the principle of a “spirit of place”, that meld seamlessly into the environment. Sustainable furnishings, eco-friendly finishes, and clean-lined modern furniture support well-being while remaining modest and clutter-free. With one-level living and an open-plan layout, the home supports aging in place while offering easy flow for family gatherings.

The Lake Huron Cottage is not just a residence, but an experience: a retreat with a soul, designed to restore balance, celebrate nature, and bring family together in harmony with the earth.
